Which language level do you need?
Most German-taught degree programs require at least level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The recognized language exams for university admission are: DSH-2, TestDaF with TDN 4 in all sections, telc Deutsch B1 Hochschule, or the Goethe-Zertifikat C2. Requirements may vary depending on the university and program.

From beginner to university readiness — here's how the path is structured.
A1 — Beginner
Understand and use simple sentences. Introduce yourself and answer simple questions. Approx. 70–100 lesson hours, 500–1,000 words.
A2 — Basic knowledge
Handle everyday situations. Simple conversations about family, work, and surroundings. Approx. 100 more hours, 200 hours total.
B1 — Intermediate
Understand the main points when clear standard language is used. Describe travels and experiences. Approx. 150 more hours, 350 hours total.
B2 — Upper intermediate
Understand complex texts. Communicate spontaneously and fluently. Sufficient for some degree programs. Approx. 200 more hours, 550 hours total.
