Insurance for students
In Germany, health insurance is mandatory – without proof of insurance, enrolment is not possible. But beyond that, there are other types of insurance that protect your studies in Germany. StudiStep explains which insurance policies you need and helps you choose the right ones.
Well protected for your studies – The most important insurance policies
Health insurance: The most important insurance for your studies in Germany.
In Germany, every person is legally required to have health insurance – including international students. Proof of insurance is mandatory for your visa application and for enrolment at university.
The good news: students under 30 can take out statutory health insurance (GKV) at an affordable student rate – currently between 120 and 130 euros per month, including long-term care insurance.
Students over 30, language course participants, or Studienkolleg (foundation course) attendees must take out private health insurance. Private rates for students start at around 80 euros per month. StudiStep advises you on which type of insurance is right for you and guides you through the application process.

Which insurance do you need?
Mandatory and voluntary – we explain the difference.
Health insurance
MANDATORY – Without health insurance, no visa and no enrollment. Statutory (GKV) or private (PKV) possible. Covers doctor visits, medication, hospital, preventive care and more.
Liability insurance
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – Protects you if you accidentally cause damage to others. Available from approx. 30 euros/year. Many landlords and dormitories require proof of it.
Accident insurance
AUTOMATIC – During your studies, you are covered by accident insurance through the university. This applies to accidents on campus, in the cafeteria and on the direct way to the university.
Household contents insurance
OPTIONAL – Protects your property (laptop, mobile phone, furniture) in the event of burglary, fire or water damage in your home. Worthwhile for valuable possessions.
Supplementary dental insurance
OPTIONAL – Statutory health insurance covers only part of dental treatment costs. Supplementary insurance can be worthwhile for expensive dentures.
Travel health insurance
WHEN TRAVELING – Recommended for travel outside Germany. Covers medical emergencies abroad and, if necessary, return transport.
