What options do you have?
Types of employment for international students in Germany
Mandatory Internship
Required by the study plan. No working-hours restriction, as it is part of the degree programme. Ideal for gaining your first work experience – often unpaid or low-paid.
Working Student (Werkstudent)
The best option for a regular income! Subject-related work alongside your studies. Max. 20 hours/week during the semester, reduced social security contributions.
Minijob
Marginal employment with simple payroll processing. Ideal for flexible side jobs such as waitressing or tutoring. Counts toward the 140-day limit.
Voluntary Internship
Not required by the study plan. Subject to the standard working-hours restrictions. Minimum wage applies after 3 months, good chances of being taken on permanently.
Research Assistant
Work at your own university – in the library, in the lab, or as a tutor. Flexible working hours and valuable contacts with professors.
Freelance / Self-employed
Your own projects and assignments – but be careful: special rules apply to students with a visa! Approval is required, and tax obligations must be observed.
